Lonna's blankets in a street scene

Ever the gamer, Lonna took my suggestion to incorporate her lovely blankets into a Moroccan street scene based on her photos and ran with it. She's done a terrific job. Her painting is lively with nice color and interesting marks. I have only a few suggestions if she'd like to take another stab at it. This is successful as it is.

Here is Lonna's original painting. Really fun and I like the blankets in the context of an open air market.

Here is one of Lonna's photos with some of the elements she used to create her scene. I'd note the cast shadows from the trees on the walls, especially the white wall to the left.
Here are a few quick suggestions:

1. Open up the curve on the front of this bowl/basin.

2. I might darken the side of the bowl a bit as it's away from the light. This also allows the lit interior to pop a little.

3. I just created a plane in shadow to show that the light is coming from the right.

4. I warmed up this big pot a little.

5. I darkened the interior space behind the blankets a little. If I were to paint this scene I'd make it mostly darker with some forms in the space and maybe a light through the other side of the room from a small window. I like the blankets as Lonna has painted them against the light wall. It has a lighter feel than a darker interior gives it. If I were to darken the interior I'd consider that in painting the blankets regarding the placement of the darks.

6. A very cursory and indication of the shadows I mentioned above. Neither the shape nor the color of these shadows I knocked in should be taken as verbatim (but you know, visually).

This one shows the same stuff as above with a darker interior. I'd play with the color and have a few places both darker and lighter in there were I to paint the scene.

I think that Lonna's painting works great as it is and hopefully it was a fun exercise in creating a scene from separate parts to create an interesting piece.

  1. Thanks, Michael. I'll try it again. I'm not happy with my pastel version, but will look at it again tomorrow.
    Happy Friday!
